The successful applicant will have some journalism experience, but will be full of talent, ambition and drive to produce and report on leading business news for GamesIndustry.biz.
As a Staff Writer, you will be based in the US or Canada and work within our highly experienced editorial team, with day-to-day support from our North American editor. You’ll be primarily working on covering the US games industry, including news, exclusives and features, across West Coast business hours. You’ll also be required to travel and cover events across the globe, and work on upcoming special North American projects, including Best Places To Work Awards Canada, and the GamesIndustry.biz 100 US.
Responsibilities Include:
Produce US-specific news content, which will include sourcing information from other websites, reporting on data, writing up press releases
Source your own stories and conduct interviews with developers, publishers, retailers and other leading games industry sectors, where applicable
Support the GamesIndustry.biz wider editorial teams during busy periods, such as with transcribing interviews or updating features
Deliver accurate, clear and concise copy to a deadline, following well defined editorial standards
Embed within game communities to spot potential stories
Travel to games industry events to secure exclusive stories and interviews
Follow up with PRs and other contacts to go deeper on stories and articles
Work in our CMS to make sure stories meet a high standard of presentation
Collaborate with the entire editorial team on all aspects of our coverage
Work with the North American editor to execute US special projects
Promote GamesIndustry.biz content across a variety of social networks
Person Specification
Required Skills and Experience:
Demonstrable talent for good reporting
Ability to unearth and tell interesting stories about the games industry
Willingness to secure interviews and ask tough questions
An understanding of how the business of video games operates - which products sell strongly, latest industry trends and the key players in the market
Ability to identify the next big game or developer
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
Strong work ethic with a high degree of determination and drive
Positive attitude and a team mentality
Passion and excitement about video games and the industry
Strong time management skills and the ability to write quickly and accurately
Desirable Skills and Experience:
A journalism qualification or degree in a relevant subject
Comfortable with hosting events, podcasts, and appearing on camera
Interest or knowledge in esports, mobile games, games retail and/or games technology
Experience producing events and awards
